Optias is a group of executives with  considerable experience across large multinationals, small agile technology businesses, government and university research.  We have particular experience in the sectors of mining. biotechnology, health and water and seek to bring sophisticated technological solutions to achieve disruptive advances in these sectors.  We work closely with academic mathematicians, particularly from Federation University, who provide supervision to skilled young mathematicians engaged in programs we undertake.

 

Dr Ian Smart (Managing Director)

Ian has considerable experience in finding innovative ways to address problems and realise opportunities across business, government and universities.  Ian has extensive entrepreneurial experience having been a founder director of biotechnology companies developed in conjunction with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.  Ian is a leading provider of investment management services to government and has helped many government departments to identify and address problems in policy development and service delivery.  Ian has also provided consulting services to start up companies.

 

Robert Crompton (Partner)

Robert has held leadership positions in large international corporations and government.  His particular focus has been on strategic leadership in which capacity he played a major role in the establishment of Australia's first private telecommunications carrier.  In the Victorian Government's Multimedia Victoria agency, Robert provided leadership in the development of the information economy.  Robert built an information technology incubator supported by Australian Government funding of $13 million and attracting $80 million in private investment.  Robert's experience also includes investment analysis, funds management and merchant banking.

Dr David Platt (Analytics)

With over 20 years' experience in consulting, David has developed valuable expertise as a facilitator in assisting organisations as they tackle difficult issues; especially in the areas of investment decisions, and disruptive change as they seek to transform their origanisation.  David has a passion for the analysis of messy, complex situations and is often asked to assist in separating the truth from insititutional myths; building business intelligence from a systematic assessment of the situation.  David's role has been to improve the quality of evidence and insight for devision makers using financial and statistical modelling.

Dr Julien Ugon (Supervising Mathematician)

Julien is a research fellow at Federation University Australia and is currently Acting Director of the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization providing leadership for various activities in the domains of IT and mathematics.  Julien teaches calculus courses in engineering degrees, as well as optimisation and operations research to mathematics students. 

Over the last 10 years, Julien has developed several algorithms for \classification, clustering, regression and data approximation.  These algorithms exhibit accuracy on level with other state of the art methods, and are designed to be fast, parameter-less and easy to deploy.

Associate Professor Adil Bagirov (Supervising Mathematician)

Adil is a highly skilled applied mathematician.  He has considerable experience working with industry and has developed major new intellectual property to address highly complex, real world problems.  Professor Bagirov is Deputy Director of the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization at Federation University.  Professor Bagirov has previously held senior positions in applied mathematics including Head of Department in the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research in the Russian Federation and head of Department in the Space Research Institute in Azerbaijan.

Dr Musa Mammadov

Musa Mammadov is a Senior Reseatch Fellow at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Federation University, Australia.  He is a member of the National ICT Australia (NICTA).  His main research interests lie in optimal control theory (asymptotic stability of solutions) and optimization (theory and numerical methods) with a strong emphasis on practical applications including biological systems.  Previously he has held positions of Professor of Mathematics at the Suleyman Demirel University (Turkey) and Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Baku State University Azerbaijan.
